BRING YOUR OWN TABLET PROGRAM FAQs

You've got questions – we've got answers.

What does unlocked mean?

Unlocked refers to a GSM tablet that is capable of connecting to a cellular network, but is not configured or programmed to a specific provider’s network. With an unlocked tablet you can change your service provider by changing the SIM card. To work with our program, an unlocked tablet must operate in the 850 and 1900 MHz bands. (Tablets purchased and activated overseas may not operate on these bands.)
Please note that many tablets on the market are Wi-Fi only devices, and cannot connect to any cellular service network.

Where can I buy an unlocked tablet?

Retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy sell unlocked tablets as well as carrier-locked tablets. Consult the retailer for availability. Please note that some retailers only sell unlocked tablets through their online store.

I have a cellular tablet that does not use a SIM card. Will it work with Straight Talk?

No. If your tablet does not use a SIM card, it uses CDMA technology. At this time, our program does not support CDMA tablets. I purchased a Service plan and can’t find my PIN - where is it? Your PIN is located on the back of your Service Plan Card. To find it, locate the gray strip on the back of the card. Scratch off the gray strip in order to reveal the 15-digit Service Card PIN.

How can I tell if my tablet will work?

In order for your tablet to be activated with our SIM card, it must be an AT&T or T-Mobile compatible tablet, OR an unlocked GSM tablet operating in the 850 and 1900 MHz bands. (Tablets purchased and activated overseas may not operate on these bands.) To activate your service, you will need to purchase a Straight Talk SIM card and Data Service Plan. In order for your tablet’s Internet and data services to work, you must update your APN (Access Point Name) settings, also called Data Settings. We provide instructions for this; however, please note that some services may not work with every device even after settings have been updated. Please remember that SIM card and Service Plan purchases are not refundable.

What if I have a Phablet?

A “phablet” is just a mobile phone with a large display. You can bring your device to Straight Talk through our Bring Your Own Phone program. For information, go to http://www.straighttalkbyop.com/ Please note that our tablet program does not support any Voice or SMS services.

What is GSM?

Global System for Mobile communications is the most popular standard for mobile devices in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, estimates that 80% of the global mobile market uses the GSM standard, which includes over 3 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories. The ubiquity of the GSM standard has been an advantage to consumers, enabling them to roam and switch carriers without switching devices.
